Finding 01 — Cursor leads everywhere except one place: ChatGPT's home turf.
On Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude, Cursor is the category's default answer — recommended in 76–81% of answers, with the top slot on Google AIO 56% of the time. Then there's ChatGPT: Cursor drops to 39%, and GitHub Copilot takes over — recommended in 70% of ChatGPT's answers and ranked first in 50%.
| Recommended in | Perplexity | ChatGPT | Google AIO | Claude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor | 79% | 39% | 81% | 76% |
| GitHub Copilot | 60% | 70% | 59% | 65% |
| Claude Code | 56% | 22% | 50% | 56% |
The lean runs both ways. Copilot — built on OpenAI's model family — gets its best numbers on ChatGPT. Claude Code gets its best rank-1 share on Claude (28%, its highest anywhere) and its worst showing on ChatGPT (22%). Two engines, two leans, both pointing home.
Finding 02 — Third category in a row: vendor blogs write the answers, official sites don't.
We logged every source cited. Community and video lead the coverage table — reddit.com appears on 16 of 18 questions, youtube.com on 17, dev.to on 11. Then comes the by-now-familiar wall: augmentcode.com — a competing AI coding tool — cited on 10 of 18 questions, with verdent.ai (11), nxcode.io, axify.io, qodo.ai and kilo.ai close behind. And the official sites? cursor.com was cited on exactly 1 question. github.com on 3. Anthropic's sites: zero.
Finding 03 — AI's memory runs behind the market, in both directions.
Tabnine — a previous-generation assistant — still appears in 30% of all answers, more than any challenger, riding years of accumulated content. Meanwhile the terminal-agent generation is already seeping in: Aider was named in 21% of answers, Cline in 21%, Windsurf in 26%. The shortlist carries both ghosts and newcomers — another reminder that AI answers reflect the written record, not the current market.
Also in the data
Drift held at 15% — the share of question×engine checks that flipped verdicts between identical runs. That's the third study in a row landing on the same number (payments and GEO both measured ~15% too), which is quietly the best news in this series for anyone who wants AI visibility to be a measurable, trackable quantity.
Methodology
- Questions: 18 buyer-intent questions about AI coding assistants — selection, head-to-head comparisons, team adoption, use cases and value. Full list below.
- Engines: Perplexity, ChatGPT (with web search), Google AI Overviews, Claude (with web search). Gemini remains excluded (grounded-run latency).
- Runs: every question × engine check ran multiple times and was majority-scored (multi-run consensus); 210 valid answers.
- Judging: answers were scored per brand by a forced-tool LLM judge: mentioned, rank, tone, recommended. Rank is judged per brand per answer, so ties can occur — rank-1 shares are upper bounds. Tracked mentions include Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Windsurf, Zed, Aider, Cline, Devin, Tabnine, Replit, Gemini Code Assist, Codex.
- Disclosure: our judge model is built by Anthropic, and Claude Code — an Anthropic product — is among the judged brands. The judge performs text classification on fetched answers and applies identical criteria to every brand; we publish this so you can weigh it. Ainswer has no affiliation with any tool measured here.
