The headline surprised us: across this buyer-question set, AI engines recommend Paddle more often than Stripe. But the crown has an asterisk — when engines pick a single first choice, it's still Stripe: on ChatGPT, Stripe is the top recommendation in 50% of answers vs Paddle's 18%. Paddle gets on the shortlist; Stripe gets the default slot.
Finding 01 — Your AI visibility is not one number. It's four parallel universes.
The same 20 questions produced wildly different worlds per engine. Paddle is near-omnipresent on Google AI Overviews (93%) and Perplexity (87%) — but only recommended in 53% of ChatGPT answers. And Lemon Squeezy effectively does not exist on ChatGPT: recommended in 5% of answers, even mentioned in just 10%.
| Recommended in | Perplexity | ChatGPT | Google AIO | Claude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paddle | 87% | 53% | 93% | 62% |
| Stripe | 62% | 82% | 56% | 62% |
| Lemon Squeezy | 47% | 5% | 69% | 48% |
Finding 02 — Two rival MoRs' blogs out-cite Stripe's and Paddle's own websites.
We logged every source the engines cited. The most-cited domain overall is Reddit (Perplexity leaned on it in 17 of 20 questions). But the sharper pattern is who wrote the rest of the reading list: dodopayments.com — a competing merchant of record — was cited on 14 of 20 questions, and fungies.io, another rival platform, on 12 of 20. The official sites they're being compared against? stripe.com appeared on 9 questions, paddle.com on 10.
Read that again: when a founder asks AI which payment platform to use, part of the answer was written by the competitors of the platforms being compared. Comparison posts on rival blogs are doing exactly what they were designed to do — except now the reader is a language model, and it cites its homework.
Finding 03 — One in five answers flips if you just ask again.
Every question ran three times per engine, identically. In 23% of Paddle's question×engine cells and 21% of Stripe's, the verdict flipped between runs — recommended in one pass, absent the next. (Lemon Squeezy flipped least, at 10% — it's more consistently in or consistently out.)
Also in the data
The next generation is already in the room. Polar was named in 10% of all answers and Creem in 7% — real presence for two young MoRs, while PayPal still haunts 51% of answers and Gumroad/FastSpring hold 23% each. And a methodological footnote that is itself a finding: Gemini's grounded answers exceeded our 4-minute per-check ceiling on all 20 questions, so it's excluded this round — the engine your buyers use isn't just more or less favorable, it's more or less measurable.
Methodology
- Questions: 20 buyer-intent questions about SaaS payments — platform selection, merchant-of-record and tax questions, geography constraints, and direct comparisons. Full list below.
- Engines: Perplexity, ChatGPT (with web search), Google AI Overviews, Claude (with web search). Gemini was attempted and excluded — its grounded responses timed out beyond 240s on every question in this window.
- Runs: every question × engine check ran 3 times (multi-run consensus); 235 valid answers total.
- Judging: each answer was scored per brand by a forced-tool LLM judge: mentioned, rank, tone (positive / qualified / negative / absent), and whether the brand was presented as a positive option ("recommended"). Tracked mentions: Paddle, Stripe, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, Creem, Gumroad, PayPal, FastSpring.
- Window: August 27–28, 2026. AI answers drift; treat these numbers as a dated snapshot.
- Data: raw per-run verdicts and citations (JSON, 357 KB).
